Justine Lindemann

A novel and critical perspective on the black urban gardening and farming movement in Cleveland, Ohio. Drawing on over three years of research, Lindemann examines the resources that gardeners and farmers use to build a self-determined urban food system and challenge traditional notions of urban and rural spaces. The findings encourage a rethinking of the rural-urban dichotomy often assumed in food systems research, offering rich conceptual and theoretical insights alongside actionable evidence.

The significance of this paper lies in its exploration of the intersection of race and space in land use and food systems decisions. By highlighting how black urban gardeners and farmers navigate and reshape their environments, the research contributes to broader discussions on political ecology and environmental justice, and the work is poised to influence future studies and policies in these critical areas.
