Research Internship at the International Food Policy Research Institute

International Food Policy Research Institute: IFPRI provides research-based policy solutions to reduce poverty sustainably and end hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. The position will be based in the Poverty, Gender, and Inclusion Unit.

Location of work: IFPRI currently has a hybrid work environment that allows staff members a minimum of two days in-office work and three days remote work. The internship will be based out of the IFPRI headquarters in Washington, DC, with an option for hybrid or fully remote work. This position might involve short-term travel to either Rwanda or Kenya.

Job description: The selected candidate will work under the guidance of IFPRI researchers on one of two potential projects related to women and youth in agriculture. The intern and IFPRI will together decide which project is the best mutual fit.

  • The first project focuses on data analysis. The intern would use Stata to conduct analysis of existing datasets from the Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) and the Women's Empowerment Metric for National Statistical Systems (WEMNS) by age group. The purpose of this analysis would be to help us identify gaps and shortcomings in how empowerment is being measured among youth to inform our conceptual framing of this work.
  • The second project focuses on data collection. The intern would support surveys related to young women's and young men's rural/agricultural livelihoods in Kenya, Rwanda, and Nigeria. The work would include finalizing survey content, monitoring/cleaning incoming data, and training enumerators for field work

Requirements: Strong applicants will have:

  • Experience, a strong interest in, and/or coursework in youth and women in the context of agriculture and rural livelihoods in low- or middle-income countries
  • Completion of an introductory graduate-level class in statistics that uses Stata or experience in a research assistantship using Stata
  • Experience managing and analyzing quantitative datasets
  • Experience with data collection in low- or middle-income countries (recommended).
  • Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and multicultural, team-based environment

Eligibility:

  • The position is open to Master's candidates in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident

Equal Opportunity Statement: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is an equal employment opportunity employer - F/M/Disability/Vet/Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity.
