Gender and Livelihoods Intern: Nairobi, Kenya
CARE | www.care.org
CARE is a leading humanitarian and development organization dedicated to fighting poverty and
social injustice with a special emphasis on rights programming for advancing wellbeing of
women and girls. CARE works in a variety of contexts from protracted crises to stable
development settings, as well as contexts in the nexus between these two types, and recognizes
that the underlying drivers of food and nutrition insecurity are poverty, inequality faced by
women and girls, non-inclusive governance, poor adaptation to climate change and the inability
to manage other economic and political shocks and stresses.
As part of its commitment to realizing CARE’s 2030 vision, the Food and Water Systems team,
within the Program Strategy and Impact Innovation (PSI) team in CARE USA, leads CARE’s work
globally in ensuring fulfillment of the right to adequate and nutritious foods and clean water for
all by promoting sustainable, productive, equitable and resilient food and water systems, while
ensuring equitable, livable incomes and dignified livelihoods. Through the women, Youth and
Livelihood (WYL) team, the FWS leads the support efforts on advancing women and girls’ rights
and livelihoods across programs and targeted countries and coordinates technical support to
both CARE and partner organisations, including the UN on Women, youth and livelihoods.
The proposed internship with Penn State University is aimed at providing the opportunity for
students to learn effective provision of technical support, guidance, and mentorship with
smallholder women farmers in East and Central Africa.
Location of work: Kisumu, Kenya
DMDP-Project Brief:
The Danida Market Development Partnership (DMDP) Project is a partnership between CARE
Kenya, CARE Denmark, Chr. Hansen (Novonesis), and Promaco-Commercial partner and Cereal
Growers Association (CGA) as the local implementing partner to advance sustainable and
resilient agriculture in Kenya by introducing the biological plant protection and inoculant
product ‘NemixC’ on sugarcane, potatoes, maize, and flowers value chains. The goal is to support
smallholder farmers in Nyandarua, Nakuru, Migori and Kakamega counties with safe
technologies to enhance crop yields, increase profitability, and strengthen their development
opportunities. The project target is to work directly with 3,600 smallholder farmers with a focus
on women. CARE will collaborate with the local Agro dealers to tap into the network of farmer
service centres (an extension structure by CGA) to aggregate farmer demand for NemixC, enable
farmer access to the product within closer proximity, and inform the Agro dealers stocking plan.
