The Early Career Research Award from the Rural Sociological Society provides funding for small-scale research projects that "enhance opportunities for scholars to pursue expanded research efforts in the future". Tobin and Castellanos plan on using the research award to further examine the impact of selling native potato varieties to broader markets and how it is linked to women's empowerment in Andean Peru.

Tobin and Castellanos are both Research Associates in the Office of International Programs. Daniel Tobin overseas the International Agriculture minor for undergraduate students and contributes to many broader initiatives including a partnership with Oxfam America. He has extensive experience in the Andean region, including dissertation fieldwork in Peru as part of his dual-title Ph.D. in Agriculture Extension and Education and International Agriculture and Development (INTAD). Paige Castellanos serves as the project manager for the Women in Agriculture Network: Honduras and has experience in Central America, having completed dissertation fieldwork in Costa Rica as part of her dual-title Ph.D. in Rural Sociology and INTAD.
