Last week the Office of International Programs and the Global Teach Ag! Initiative co-hosted a global agriculture course as part of the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Agricultural Sciences.

The course was offered as a learning laboratory, with opportunities for students enrolled in INTAD and INTAG to practice teaching with the support of College of Agricultural Sciences faculty. Additionally, Governor's School students had the opportunity to see how different disciplines integrate global activities.

An overview of lessons offered:

  • "What is Global Agriculture?" taught by Loren Rivera (INTAD/ENT)
  • "Buzz Words: Hunger and Food Security" taught by Jillian Gordon (INTAG/AEE)
  • "Chocolate: A Global Case Study" taught by Paige Castellanos (INTAD/RSOC)
  • "A World of Opportunities" facilitated by Daniel Foster, Global Teach Ag! Initative
  • "Putting Culture into Agriculture" taught by the Malaysian Student Association
  • "Amazing Race: Global Agriculture Edition" organized by Janae Bickhart (INTAG/AEE)

Many additional INTAD and INTAG students volunteered to share their knowledge and experiences throughout the week. During the first lesson, students interviewed INTAD volunteers about their global research and presented their findings to the rest of the class in a "talk show" format. Later in the week, INTAG students shared details about their agriculturally-focused study abroad experiences.

"Governor's School provided a good opportunity for me to practice my teaching skills with a different audience," said Paige Castellanos, Ph.D. candidate in INTAD and Rural Sociology. "The students were highly motivated to learn about global agriculture, which made it a pleasure to teach the class."
