Asifa Hameed is Fulbright fellow, public outreach officer, and Ph.D. student in Entomology and International Agriculture and Development at Penn State University.
Asifa is currently under the supervision of Dr. Ed Rajotte and Dr. Christina Rosa, studying the impact of Soybean vein necrosis virus on Soybean crop and carrier vector Neohydrothrips variabilis. She is interested in how the third party virus actually modulates the interaction between the host and insect vector.
"I was always interested in determining if a virus is either beneficial or harmful. Everything in this world which seems on one end harmful, has some beneficial aspects," said Asifa. Her research questions are dynamic and related to the tritrophic interaction between the host, insect vector and Soybean vein necrosis virus.
Asifa is originally from Pakistan. She earned her bachelor and master degrees in Agricultural Entomology from University College of Agriculture, Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan Punjab Pakistan. She did a second masters degree in Business Administration from Allama Iqbal Open University Islamabad Pakistan. Before coming to Penn State University, she was Assistant Entomologist in Ayub Agricultural Research Institute Faisalabad Punjab Pakistan. She has published 30 research papers and 2 books in Agricultural Entomology. Asifa has worked on various crops and different aspects of Entomology in Pakistan. She has worked in 5 different projects of Asian Development Bank, USDA, and Punjab Agricultural Research Board.
