Short-term study abroad in Peru from May 7-22, 2012 (GEOG493 "Environmental Issues Across the Americas").

GEOG493 “Environmental Issues Across the Americas”

May 7 – May 22, 2012 – Includes field school in Peru at end of spring semester and excursions to Cusco and Machu Picchu

A service learning experience based on an interdisciplinary team-based, problem-solving, project-driven approach. The course integrates approaches from a variety of academic disciplines, including ecology, economics, business, and political science. Our travel itinerary includes opportunities to investigate water resources, gold mining, sustainable development, biodiversity, ecotourism, and human migrations by travelling the newly-completed InterOceanic Highway from the high Andes to the tropical rainforest. The Peruvian portion of the highway traverses the western Amazon basin through the global hotspot of biodiversity, ascends the Andes, and terminates at the Pacific Ocean, completing international trade routes to asian markets; it is posing profound environmental, social, and economic impacts.
