One way for students to build research skills is to apply for an Erickson Discovery Grant, which provides $3,500 to start, continue, or finish a research project over the summer and an opportunity to present findings at the upcoming school year's Undergraduate Exhibition. The proposed project can be on any topic, but should be one that is the student's idea or one where the student is taking the lead.

Applicants must be current undergraduates with at least one semester remaining after the funded summer. The project must be endorsed by a Penn State mentor. Any work outside of the proposed project must be limited to fifteen hours per week. Applicants must not have accepted an Erickson Discovery Grant previously.

The 2023 Erickson Discovery Grant application must be submitted by February 12, 2023. URFM (Undergraduate Research and Fellowships Mentoring) is available to help with application and writing materials until January 27, 2023.
