Penn State Extension Lehigh County Ag Entrepreneurship Internship 2017

The opportunities to start, manage and grow an enterprise are not limited by geographic boundaries. National and international enterprises are considered by many to be the ripest fruit to pick.

The Earl & Kay Harbaugh Agricultural Entrepreneurship Intern selected for this project will research, design, and produce a guidebook highlighting the import/export framework between Nicaragua and the United States. This project is focused on international trade for local, sustainable, social-mission based entrepreneurial efforts originating in rural Nicaraguan villages. Fluency with Latin American Spanish may be helpful, but is not required.

This paid summer internship will run early June through late July (8 weeks) for 30 hours per week at $12.00 per hour.

Responsibilities on this project may include: 

  • Build on the existing list of potential contacts with expertise in Nicaraguan/U.S. trade
  • Dialogue with these trade contacts exploring relevant agencies and authorities with oversight for Nicaraguan/U.S. trade
  • With the relevant agencies and authorities, explore and catalogue relevant regulations
  • Utilize current Nicaraguan entrepreneurs to gauge the usability of the guidebook draft
  • Finalize working version of a Nicaraguan export/import guidebook

The Earl & Kay Harbaugh Agricultural Entrepreneurship Intern selected for this project will collaborate with, and be supported by, the Penn State, Globalizing Extension committee with the primary beneficiaries of this initial guidebook being Nicaraguan value-added food products entrepreneurs. The work schedule is flexible but will be something close to 30 hours per week for 8 weeks beginning in early June.

We are seeking a productive College of Agricultural Sciences Penn State student that recognizes this opportunity to build their existing entrepreneurship capacity. This student will be working with experts inside and outside of the United States and Nicaragua, and will be conducting their work as a representative of Penn State. This student will implement and complete this project with support and guidance of a local Penn State Educator while working in a professionally independent setting. The quality of this work and the anticipated guidebook will meet Penn State standards.
