Since last October, community members in the Lost Creek Watershed in Juniata County have been meeting with the AEC to develop a vision for Lost Creek—what they want to see for their watershed now and into the future. With their dedication and passion for the health of their watershed and a blueprint to guide them, the future is bright.

On a warm sunny day in late June, over 220 producers, agriculture industry representatives, conservation professionals, researchers and educators gathered at the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences’ Southeast Research and Education Center (SEAREC) for an agronomic field day to learn the latest in research and practice to help “farm for success.”

Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences is now offering an undergraduate certificate program to help train the next generation of conservation professionals to help agricultural producers meet soil health and water quality goals.

Volunteers gathered on June 10th at a family farm just outside of New Holland along the banks of Mill Creek. The group included Penn State’s AEC staff, Greening the Lower Susquehanna volunteers, dedicated Lancaster County Citizens, and enthusiastic attendees from Lancaster County’s first annual Water Week activities. The day was filled with hard work for a good cause.

AEC staff members were among the nearly 1,400 who participated in Lancaster Water Week activities June 3-10 to celebrate the county’s waters, educate about the challenges we face in achieving clean water, and activating people to take action.

The AEC and other partners will provide winter farmer meetings focused agriculture and conservation in the Chiques and Conewago watersheds in Lancaster, Dauphin and Lebanon Counties. The Chiques farmers meeting will be held February 23 at Acorn Farms in Mt. Joy. Londonderry Township will host the Conewago meeting on March 3 at Sunset Golf Course in Middletown.

Penn State Extension is part of a recently announced Regional Conservation Partnership Program provided by USDA NRCS to support soil and water conservation efforts on farms in Centre, Clinton and Lycoming Counties. Along with Extension, lead partner Chesapeake Bay Foundation will work with the Pennsylvania No-Till Alliance, Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture, and local conservation districts and NRCS offices to conduct outreach, education and research to accelerate adoption of soil health practices to improve water quality.

A recent College of Ag study shows Pennsylvania farmers in the Chesapeake Bay watershed have voluntarily implemented many conservation practices with their own dollars. The study is the first comprehensive effort to document and report these previously unreported practices to the Chesapeake Bay Program.
