John J. Tyler Arboretum in Delaware County, PA is seeking a paid horticulture intern from May - August 2017.

Starting mid-May 2017 Tyler Arboretum is seeking an intern who is passionate about horticulture and has a commitment to learning through working. The internship is intended for those with an existing knowledge of routine garden maintenance and is interested in furthering this skillset. This internship will grow your woody plant identification knowledge as well as skills in people engagement. Intern will also be exposed to working in Tyler Arboretum's 550 acre natural areas which involves trail maintenance and invasive plant removal.

Work schedule: 37.5 hours a week from mid-May to end of August -- negotiable. Some weekends and evenings

Salary Range: paid $12 to $15/hour depending on experience and education. Credit or internship requirements can be arranged as needed.

Reports to: Director of Horticulture

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain display beds (mulching, weeding, pruning, watering, etc.)
  • Assist with mapping and plant records; evaluate plant material (herbaceous and woody plants)
  • Help with grounds maintenance activities
  • Minor repair of equipment and tools
  • Pest and weed control, including invasive species management

Priority will be placed on applicants with degree focused on Horticulture, Biology, Ecology, Forestry or similar field. Applicants who recently graduated (within 12 months period) can apply.

  • Able to lift 30 pounds and greater required
  • Be physically fit
  • Work effectively in inclement weather required
  • Able to stand, walk and kneel for prolong amount of time is expected

  • Organized, responsible/mature, team player, self-directed, focused but easy going, friendly and courteous
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to work with diverse volunteers and staff

Educational Opportunities:

  • Participate in Tyler's public program offerings (i.e., wildflower walks, bird walks, butterfly walks, history walks)
  • Attend field trips to regional gardens, arboreta, nurseries and/or project sites
  • Learn about public garden management from educational sessions with Tyler staff
