A Student Engagement Event in Plant Sciences is scheduled for Monday, November 14 from 6-8 pm in 102 Animal, Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Building. The purpose of the event is to help connect interested students with faculty from the primary participating departments of the Plant Sciences major (i.e., the Departments of Plant Science, Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology, and Entomology) to explore potential research experiences for those students.

Faculty, staff, and/or graduate students from the primary cooperating department of the Plant Sciences major will be available to meet with students to introduce them to the possibilities of engaging in research labs/greenhouses/fields within the Plant Sciences major and associated minors. Many times, research faculty do not become engaged with the undergraduate students until later in the student’s studies when they may take an advanced course in that area of interest. This event is designed to encourage engagement earlier in the student’s studies and career. In addition, research and extension faculty with no teaching responsibilities may not have many opportunities to connect with the undergraduates to provide experiential learning opportunities.

This event is open to students of all majors. A brief discussion of the plant sciences major and associate minors will be included as well as the benefits of authentic research in the undergraduate experience and the kinds of research opportunities in the cooperating departments. There will be plenty of time for meet and greet opportunities as well as some selected research demonstrations. Snacks and drinks will also be provided.
