Ice, fire, water, stone: how do people survive in environments seemingly hostile to human life?

In this class we will read speculative fiction, poetry, travel narratives, and creative nonfiction about polar exploration, forest fires, mountain climbing, sea voyages, interstellar travel, and desert islands, among other environments. We will take several on-campus field trips during class sessions to observe ice, fire, water, and stone at Penn State.

Meets on Tuesday and Thursday 9:05-10:20 am.
