The Goldwater Scholarship is a distinguished undergraduate scholarship initiative for second- and third-year undergraduates in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering who are interested in pursuing careers in research. Goldwater Scholars receive national recognition for their research potential and up to $7,500 per year! In many ways, this undergraduate initiative is considered a precursor to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Have a minimum of one semester and no more than two years of undergraduate study remaining beginning September 2022
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0, although it is highly recommended students have a minimum GPA of 3.70
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Have a demonstrated interest in a research career in an Goldwater-approved field of study
In order to be considered for University nomination, a student must first submit a brief pre-application form, which can easily be completed in one sitting. This form asks for the student’s year in school, major, GPA, brief career interest statement, highest degree anticipated, and a list of potential recommendation letter writers. Note: Only a list of potential writers are required at this stage; students do not need to worry about any last minute requests!
Pre-applications must be submitted by Sunday, October 2, 2022.
