First Gen Advocates will host a career exploration workshop from 10:45 am to 4 pm on Saturday, March 26. All students are welcome and encouraged to attend. Registration deadline March 19th.

You come to Penn State for an education and the vast number of opportunities that may lead you to a successful career. Among these opportunities is the chance to explore career options through workshops, discussions, and, of course, career fairs. Workshops give you the opportunity to learn more in depth about a company, network with career professionals, and develop skills necessary for the workplace.

First-generation students face a significant number of unique struggles when studying at a university. Typically, greater financial and social struggles, as well as little knowledge of the resources available hinder first-generation students from reaching their full potential. First Gen Advocates (FGA) addresses these issues. FGA is a student-run organization that aims to promote awareness, advocacy, and mentorship to support first-generation students at Penn State. FGA holds workshops, information sessions, social events, and a mentorship program for their members. FGA is hosting an event that combines all these activities into one.

On Saturday, March 26, from 10:45 am to 4:00 pm, FGA will host a career-exploration workshop open to all Penn State students interested in STEM- and business-related fields. The event will be offered both via Zoom and in person in 102 Thomas Building, University Park. World-renowned companies, such as Liberty Mutual, Deloitte and PwC are slated to appear. Registration for the event closes on March 19 at 5:00 pm. Those attending by Zoom will be sent the link once registration is complete.

Attendees can expect the following during the workshop:

  • 10:45–11:00 am - welcome and event overview
  • 11:00-11:55 am - professional headshot photos
  • 12:00-12:55 pm - information sessions with PwC
  • 1:00–1:30 pm - 'Be Well, Work Well' break - students attending in person will receive a complimentary lunch
  • 1:30-2:25 pm - concurrent workshops with PwC and Liberty Mutual
  • 2:30–3:30 pm - networking session-students will have the chance to build relationships with the companies in attendance
  • 3:30-3:40 pm - final remarks from FGA
  • 3:45-4:00 pm - students who attend in person will be given a take-home dinner

Snacks and refreshments will be provided throughout the event.

All students are encouraged to attend whether they are first-generation students or not.  This event will allow you to build and improve skills essential to any workplace, establish a relationship with a company of their interest, and formulate connections with career professionals.

As you begin to search for internship and full-time opportunities for summer 2022, this will be a great opportunity for you to broaden your professionalism horizons and potentially narrow down that job search.
