Call for applications in food and water security

SAFES and Penn State’s Center for Security Research and Education (CSRE) are collaborating to support research related to the protection of the nation’s food and water supplies and associated critical infrastructure.

CSRE’s Fall 2021 grant program has opened (with a deadline of Sept. 30) and offers “Impact Grants” up to $30,000, and “Seed Grants” up to $15,000. Grant recipients will be asked to collaborate with CSRE as it builds an anticipated Spring 2022 conference on critical infrastructure designed to bring potential external partners to Penn State.

The Fall 2021 program is open to any proposal relating to CSRE's security-related mission, but will specifically encourage proposals related to:

  • Protection of food and water supplies from cyberattacks at all stages of the production and distribution processes;
  • Food or water supply contamination or disruption, including accidental or intentional food contamination, natural or human attack on a food transportation or energy source;
  • Disease and pests, resulting from exposure during international or national movement through the supply chain or from the harmful effects of severe weather coupled with global climate change.

SAFES Membership Support

In line with the mission to catalyze critical food and environmental research, SAFES Associate and Affiliate members may be eligible to receive pre-award support for interdisciplinary team formation as well as proposal creation and submission. SAFES member faculty awarded a CSRE grant will also be eligible for post-award support of the grant.

SAFES member faculty may email safes@psu.edu by the first week of September 2021 to indicate their interest in applying for a CSRE seed grant. SAFES staff will also collaborate closely with CSRE to ensure that research expertise in the areas of food and environment are integrated with interdisciplinary teams in other colleges; investigators who are interested in joining an interdisciplinary team are also encouraged to contact safes@psu.edu.
