Upcoming Events

There are a variety of interactive special events and activities at Ag Progress Days. Search by Program areas using the tabs on the right navigation or by Day on the left navigation. Or use the search feature below to find things by word match or a location.

Exhibitors now have specific booth numbers, assigning them to their location to connect with our new exhibitor map and registration system. Booth labels identify the building, tent, or area with the first one or two letters coded for name of a location.

View the Locations Abbreviation Key.

Indoor exhibits located in the building or tent are numbered from the main entrance, beginning with the hundred number indicating rows 1 thru 5, with the high numbered booth typically on the southern side of the exhibit tent or building.

Outdoor exhibit booth labels use the first letter or letters to identify if they are located East (E) or West (W) of Main Street or on Main Street (M). Additional abbreviations are the border streets of Demo Alley (DA) and Harrington Lane (H) as noted on the map. The first one or two numbers identify the street on which they are located, streets 1 thru 13. Typically the exhibitor booth space numbers on the north side of the street are even, and those on the south side are odd.

Peach and apple trees at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden site will be used to discuss rootstocks for fruit trees, pruning and tree training, and wildlife and pest control for fruit trees. Apple trees on dwarfing rootstocks trained to a trellis along with peach trees that have been minimally pruned will serve as examples of trees typically found in home orchards. Trees have not been sprayed with pesticides, so there are many examples of insect and disease damage that are commonly observed on fruit trees in Pennsylvania. Attendees are free to ask questions related to any topic related to growing tree fruit.

When: August 14, 2018, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

The brewing industry in Pennsylvania has a $1.9 billion economic impact, and this figure is expected to rise annually. Hops, a perennial plant which produces cones, is a key ingredient in the brewing industry, as it is used to add flavor and/ or bitterness to beer. More than a century ago, PA was a prolific hops producer. In the late 1800's, plant diseases including powdery and downy mildews rapidly spread throughout the hopyards in PA leading to a rapid decline in hops production. As plant protection technology and research has improved, products and varieties of hops exist which can grow well in PA. This tour will look at Penn State's hopyard and the effort to evaluate these varieties for yield and quality characteristics. Equipment used in small scale hops production will also be on hand.

High tunnels are inexpensive structures used for extending the growing season and improving yields and quality of vegetables, berries, and cut flowers. At Penn State’s High Tunnel Research and Extension Facility, strawberries and raspberries are being grown in containers in 15 tunnels with 5 different types of plastics to better manage plant growth, temperatures, and pests. To learn how to better manage heat load, four additional tunnels are equipped with various types of solar-powered automated venting options including a ridge-vent, roll-up roof, roll-down sides, and roll-up sides. Work being conducted will be explained and effects of the plastics on yields and microenvironment will be discussed.
