A very active volunteer leader and philanthropic supporter of the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences and Penn State Extension, Martenas, along with his wife, Marian McKeegan Martenas, have pledged $250,000 in current and future gifts through their estate, to be divided among a new endowment, an existing endowment, a new building and an existing scholarship fund.

CSL Behring, a global specialty biotherapeutics leader, has committed $4.92 million to Penn State over the next six years to create the multidisciplinary Center of Excellence in Biotechnology, and to revitalize the Shared Fermentation Facility, an engine for collaboration and innovation in biological training and research on the University Park campus.

Gail Graybill Carson and her husband, Dr. James H. Carson, of Lititz, have created the J. Clair Graybill Scholarship in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences to commemorate the life and values of Mrs. Carson's father, the late J. Clair Graybill. The scholarship will be awarded to students in the college with demonstrated financial need, with first preference going to students who have graduated or will graduate from any high school in Lancaster County.

Joan and John Baxter, of Linfield, Pennsylvania, have created an endowment, the Julie A. Haines Memorial Professional Development Scholarship for Penn State Extension, to memorialize their niece, Julie Haines. The fund will support professional development for nutrition education paraprofessionals, or those in a similar role, employed by Penn State Extension.

Penn State has recognized Earl Harbaugh, a 1961 alumnus of the College of Agricultural Sciences, and his wife, Kay Harbaugh, as its 2016 Fundraising Volunteers of the Year. The award, which was officially presented to the Harbaughs on Oct. 7 for their service to the University, honors the leadership of alumni and friends in securing philanthropic support for Penn State. The Harbaughs are longtime volunteers for the College of Agricultural Sciences, and they have focused their service and philanthropy on promoting entrepreneurial education and scholarships within the college.

When trade organizations representing the chocolate industry created an endowment in 1986 to support Penn State research on Theobroma cacao -- the cocoa tree -- the use of biotechnology to improve plants was still in its infancy. Now, three decades later, the endowment has grown, and along with it the scientific knowledge that is helping to promote economic security for cocoa farmers in developing countries and to ensure a reliable supply of the raw material needed to manufacture one of the world's favorite delicacies.

Nancy Donahue, of Portsmouth, Virginia, has provided $50,000 to create a scholarship endowment in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences in memory of her late husband, W. Durbin Donahue, who graduated from the college before embarking on a long career as a veterinarian. The W. Durbin Donahue, VMD, and Nancy J. Donahue Scholarship is aimed at helping to defray the educational costs of pre-veterinary students.

In collaboration with partners in Europe and Africa, researchers at Penn State have received a five-year, $10.2-million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to investigate a new method for preventing the transmission of malaria. The method involves limiting mosquito access to houses by blocking openings and installing "eave tubes" that contain a unique type of insecticide-laced mosquito netting developed by Dutch partner In2Care that kills the insects as they attempt to enter.
