After October 2025, Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates, patches, or technical support from Microsoft. Penn State's Office of Information Systems states that "All University-owned devices must run an operating system which still receives security updates from the vendor."

To meet these standards, Ag IT has launched a project to upgrade compatible College PCs to Windows 11 over the coming months, and to assist in replacing any incompatible computers or transition them off the University network.

Key points to note:

  1. Hardware requirements: Windows 11 has specific hardware requirements that some older PCs might not meet. In these situations, you may need to purchase new devices or transition the incompatible devices off the University network. Ag IT will be reaching out to units to help identify which devices cannot be upgraded and help come up with a remediation plan.
  2. Upgrade schedule: Our team has already begun working with some individuals to upgrade their computers, and this will ramp up over the coming months. Please look for communications from your IT Consultant detailing specifics for your area.
  3. Back up data before the upgrade: Always store data in a location that is backed up such as OneDrive. This way we can avoid any data loss if there are problems during the upgrade.
  4. Checking software and external device compatibility: If you use unique research applications or have computers connected to specialized equipment, we advise you to start checking with the software or hardware vendors now to determine if they are compatible with Windows 11.
  5. Feedback and concerns: We understand that upgrades can be challenging, and we appreciate your patience as we work through this project. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Ag IT with any concerns or feedback.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we make this important transition. Our goal is to ensure a smooth and secure upgrade for everyone.
