Students compete in teams of four in a student challenge exam at the Sports Turf Managers Association's (STMA) annual meeting. Topics cover management of athletic fields and include turf ID, irrigation, pest ID, soil science, and synthetic turf. The STMA conference is attended by sports turf managers, many of whom are at the highest levels of sports field management, including the NFL, MLB, and MLS. Students have the opportunity to attend educational sessions and a large trade show at the conference. Students may earn credit for participation in the study sessions and online quizzes.
