Penn State Cloud Program

The Cloud Program provides access to cloud-based IT Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) for easy and rapid acquisition, development, and scaling of resources. Cloud computing meets users' needs in a secure manner without the requirement to purchase and maintain physical hardware. The Cloud Program lets you focus on your own teaching and research by reducing the administrative and technical debt associated with purchasing, powering, and maintaining servers.

IaaS and PaaS replace up-front infrastructure expenses with low variable costs that scale to your needs. Users no longer need to plan for and procure servers and other IT infrastructure weeks or months in advance. Instead, cloud computing can instantly spin up thousands of servers in minutes to deliver, store, or share data.

The offerings are available to all Penn State faculty and staff members. Students can have access to the current offerings when working directly with faculty, staff, or in lab environments.

Benefits and Uses of Iaas and PaaS

  • Storage of Low and Moderate (Level 1/Level 2) Data
  • Contractual addenda including intellectual property protections
  • Data downloads from cloud storage to campus systems are not metered and billed
  • Account management through Penn State Identity Services
  • Scalable on-demand computing resources to meet various teaching and research jobs and workloads
  • Pay only for the individual services you need, for as long as you use them, and without requiring long-term contracts or complex licensing
