Louis (Mick) Colvin '60 B.S. Animal Husbandry

The retired executive director of the Certified Angus Beef program in Wooster, Ohio, Colvin pioneered the concept of fresh-beef branding. Under Colvin, the Certified Angus Beef program became a leader in quality in the beef industry. During 22 years as executive director, Colvin grew Certified Angus Beef to almost 500 million pounds worldwide and $2.7 billion in customer sales annually.

Begun in 1978, the Certified Beef program works with ranchers across the United States. Their beef is evaluated by USDA graders and sent to grocery stores and restaurants, giving consumers information about the quality of the product.

A 1960 Penn State graduate in Animal Industry, Colvin has won many awards for his service to the beef industry, including the American Meat Institute's Industry Advancement Award and the Livestock Publications Council Headliner's Award. Penn State honored him in 1985 with the Dairy and Animal Science Department's Distinguished Alumni Award. He also has been inducted into the Meat Industry Hall of Fame and the Saddle & Sirloin Portrait Gallery.

Colvin, who has held leadership roles with the National Cattlemen's Association and the Ohio Angus Association, lives with his wife, Virginia, on their farm in West Salem.
