Everyone loves the Berkey Creamery and the ice cream, but did you know the Creamery actually played a role in the retail markets of State College and Altoona?
The very first stand-alone creamery was built in 1889, and contained a cold-storage room, a cream-ripening room, a workroom and space for an office. During this time, dairy short courses were offered, and demand was so high for the courses that milk from local farmers needed to be delivered daily. In 1904, the creamery moved to what is now the Patterson Building, and production increased. In addition, a system of pasteurizing milk was established, and allowed for delivery of creamery products to retail markets in State College and Altoona.
