  • Everyone will need to do the IACUC modules or you will not be allowed to participate in the research!!!

- Hypothesis: Length of mare's parturition may have some effect on mare-foal bonding behavior following parturition.

- Initial relationship is very important to the foal!

- Decision of when to intervene is subjective.

- Project is inexpensive and gets everyone involved!

- It also may give us a better idea of how to optimize the foaling experience.

- 3-5 members of the team should be there when each foal is born.

  • Watch everything that happens, everyone gets 2 ethograms - one for the mare and one for the foal
  • Find some videos to check out and practice your behavioral analysis so that you do not feel lost when it's all actually happening. We want accurate, clean data - so come prepared!!!
Next Team Meeting will be at the barn!! February 10th at 7:30!!

This meeting was held at the barn to prepare everyone for the behavioral study!

  • The team conducted a behavioral ethogram with Dr. Staniar being the foal - yeah, that happened.
  • Practice ethograms were provided for all team members to become familiar with the types of behaviors they will be responsible for keeping track of.
  • Foal watch sign-ups were posted. Check the website for contact information and other important information for the upcoming study.
  • Team members will be working with 407. If you sign up - PLEASE SHOW UP! Your fellow team members as well as the 407 students really need help, so if you do not think you can make it, then reconsider your sign-up time.
  • If you do not think you can handle one specific week, then work with the leaders to ensure a more regular schedule (i.e. every Tuesday night or something).
  • Fun activities will be provided during the foal watch times such that you are not insanely bored while waiting at 3:00 a.m. Our goal is to provide everyone with the chance to see something incredibly exciting and get first-hand experience.
