Soil judging is a national competition sponsored by the Soil Science Society of America. Through a series of regional competitions and a national competition, teams from many different universities across the nation come together to test their soil judging skills and compete for top honors.

This program provides an opportunity to practice describing soils in the field as well as see different soils at the competitions. The regional competition takes place in the fall, with only the top three teams advancing to the national competition held in the spring. The location of these competitions rotates through the different regions.

Participants learn how to identify and describe soils in the field and then use this description to determine suitable uses for that particular soil. This is an important skill for many natural science disciplines and careers.
