Restarting a computer closes all active applications and services, powers off the computer, then starts it back up. “Restarting” and “Rebooting” are synonyms and you’ll hear the terms used interchangeably.

To Restart a Windows 11 Computer

  1. Save any documents you have open and close any open software applications.
  2. Click the Start button in the lower center of your screen.Windows 11 start menu
  3. At the right, click the Power button which is to the right of your name. Windows 11 power button
  4. Choose Restart from the pop-up list. Windows 11 Restart button
  5. Walk away from the computer. The computer will turn off and then turn on again. 

To Restart a Windows 10 Computer

  1. Save any documents you have open and close any open software applications.
  2. Click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen pcstart.png then left click the Power button pcpower.png
  3. If you see an option to Update and Restart always choose this option, otherwise, choose Restart.

To Restart an Apple Macintosh Computer

  1. Save any documents you have open and close any open software applications.
  2. Click the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen, then choose Restart.
