Restarting a computer closes all active applications and services, powers off the computer, then starts it back up. “Restarting” and “Rebooting” are synonyms and you’ll hear the terms used interchangeably.
To Restart a Windows 11 Computer
- Save any documents you have open and close any open software applications.
- Click the Start button in the lower center of your screen.
- At the right, click the Power button which is to the right of your name.
- Choose Restart from the pop-up list.
- Walk away from the computer. The computer will turn off and then turn on again.
To Restart a Windows 10 Computer
- Save any documents you have open and close any open software applications.
- Click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen then left click the Power button
- If you see an option to Update and Restart always choose this option, otherwise, choose Restart.
To Restart an Apple Macintosh Computer
- Save any documents you have open and close any open software applications.
- Click the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen, then choose Restart.
- A confirmation screen opens and gives you the option to reopen any windows you currently have open, then click Restart.
