Featuring S. Shyam Sundar Why Do We Fall for Fake News, and What Can Be Done About It?

When January 26, 2021, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Fake news can be deadly. During the pandemic, false information about causes, spread, and cures related to COVID-19 have shaped actions, at both individual and institutional levels. In places like India, scores of innocent people have been lynched by vigilante mobs after false rumors of child kidnappings and organ harvesting spread in the form of doctored videos shared via the WhatsApp encrypted message system. Dr. S. Shyam Sundar, with funding from WhatsApp and the National Science Foundation, has been investigating the psychology of our susceptibility to online misinformation and working on solutions to address this scourge of modern media.

We invite you to join us for the first Penn State Cooking Classic– a series of hour-long programs that aim to bring Penn State alumni together to learn valuable cooking and related life skills by tapping into the talents across our community. Some of the things you can learn are about smoking meats, coffee, healthy foods, specialty chocolate and wine, and more during the programs hosted by various colleges and campuses. In addition to bringing together Penn State alumni, we are also bringing awareness to food insecurity experienced by students across the Penn State system. Whether or not you are able to join us for these unique programs, please consider supporting Penn State students by making a gift to support one of the Penn State food pantries. Every $5 provides 20 or more meals and other necessities (e.g. toiletries, paper products). Donate here. https://give.communityfunded.com/o/annual-giving/i/pennstate-crowdfunding/s/cooking-classic
