Featuring Derek Lee True Tall Tales From Tanzania: Giraffe Science Offers Hope in the Climate and Biodiversity Crises

When January 19, 2021, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Masai giraffes live only in Tanzania and Kenya, and their numbers are falling fast. Habitat loss and illegal hunting have caused Masai giraffe numbers to decline over 50% in the last few decades! Our conservation science research is discovering where Masai giraffes are doing well, where they are not, and why, so that giraffes and people can thrive together. We study wild Masai giraffes using each animal’s unique spot pattern as identification along with big data tools to document births, deaths, movements, and behavior of thousands of individual giraffes.

In addition to bringing together Penn State alumni, we are also bringing awareness to food insecurity experienced by students across the Penn State system. When January 26, 2021, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Fake news can be deadly. During the pandemic, false information about causes, spread, and cures related to COVID-19 have shaped actions, at both individual and institutional levels. In places like India, scores of innocent people have been lynched by vigilante mobs after false rumors of child kidnappings and organ harvesting spread in the form of doctored videos shared via the WhatsApp encrypted message system. Dr. S. Shyam Sundar, with funding from WhatsApp and the National Science Foundation, has been investigating the psychology of our susceptibility to online misinformation and working on solutions to address this scourge of modern media.
