The Penn State Student Association for Fire Ecology (PSU-SAFE) is a chapter of the National Student Association for Fire Ecology (SAFE). PSU-SAFE is dedicated to promoting fire ecology in academia and providing resources to educate students, faculty, and extension employees about the applications of fire ecology as a method of natural resource management. PSU-SAFE hosts events such as public forums and discussion panels with experts in the field of fire ecology and other related topics, as well as book drives and weather-permitted outdoor activities measuring fuels and learning about the tools used in the application of fire as a form of management. PSU-SAFE does not conduct prescribed burns but it can offer resources to students interested in getting certifications which would allow them to participate in prescribed burns overseen by qualified personnel from organizations such as the DCNR or Pennsylvania Game Commission.
