Opportunity:
The Volunteer Program Assistant position is a new, part-time position housed within The Arboretum at Penn State. The Volunteer Program Assistant supports the Volunteer Coordinator in the development, management, and enhancement of the Arboretum's volunteer program. This is a part-time (8-12 hour/week), year-round position.
Responsibilities:
- Volunteer Recruitment
a. Identify recruitment opportunities and promote the volunteer program through attendance at volunteer fairs, presentations to clubs and groups, and electronic postings to relevant e-mail listserves and Internet-based outlets.
b. Ensure that volunteer opportunities are posted on the Arboretum's website, online events calendar, and other appropriate internal platforms.
2. Volunteer Orientation and Training
a. Develop, plan, and host introductory informational sessions for prospective Arboretum volunteers. Conduct follow-up with attendees to encourage enrollment in volunteer program.
b. Develop, plan, and host on-site orientation sessions for new volunteers. Conduct follow-up with attendees to encourage sign-up for specific volunteer shifts / opportunities.
3. Volunteer Enrichment and Appreciation
a. Develop, plan, and host a series of educational and enrichment sessions for Arboretum volunteers.
b. Assist with the planning of the Arboretum's annual volunteer appreciation party.
4. Volunteer Program Enhancement
a. Update existing volunteer training and informational materials, including the Docent Handbook.
b. Work with Volunteer Coordinator and program staff to develop training materials for other Arboretum volunteer teams.
c. Compile all training materials into a single master document, to be used as the Arboretum's authoritative reference for volunteer training.
Qualifications:
Applicants should be familiar with the development and management of volunteer and/or educational programs, should enjoy working with people, and should possess strong oral and written communication skills. Computer proficiency and experience working with the Microsoft Office suite of software programs are required. Applicants should be organized, detail-oriented, and capable of prioritizing and managing several responsibilities at once.
