First Gen Advocates, a student organization at Penn State, and Penn State Career Services will host a LinkedIn workshop on Monday, February 7th, to teach college students how to establish a LinkedIn presence and properly present themselves to employers.
Eighty-seven percent of job recruiters use LinkedIn regularly when looking for potential employees. With over 14 million jobs being offered on LinkedIn at any given time, having a strong profile and online presence are essential when it comes to navigating a career or internship search. Although this process is daunting for any college student, it can be especially difficult for first-generation college students that may not have access to guidance and resources.
A first-generation college student is any student who is the first in their family to either go to college, would be the first to finish college, had a parent(s) who received only an associate degree, or any student who is the first in their family to attend college in the United States. First Gen Advocates is here to help students who fit this description and face these struggles.
First Gen Advocates (FGA) is a student organization at Penn State that works to promote awareness, advocacy, and mentorship to support first-generation college students. FGA mentors and assists undergraduate, first-generation college students by offering a mentorship program, workshops for professional and personal development, social/de-stress events, and resources for information. By pairing a first-generation college student with a mentor, or offering them several helpful resources, FGA can push students to achieve success.
On Monday, February 7th, from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. EST, First Gen Advocates and Penn State Career Services will host an event to teach college students how to establish a LinkedIn presence and properly present themselves to employers. The event will be offered in both the HUB-Robeson Center, Room 325, and virtually via Zoom.
As students begin their summer 2022 internship and full-time job searches, First Gen Advocates believes this event can be beneficial to students.
