First Gen Advocates, a student organization committed to promoting advocacy, awareness and mentorship for first-generation students across Penn State, is hosting a commencement picnic for any graduating first-generation who would like to attend.

First generation students are among 26% of the graduating population according to a Pew Research survey in 2019. Given this large subset of the graduating class, it is something that should be celebrated. Completing a degree with little or unfounded guidance from your support system is tough, and First Gen Advocates (FGA) would like to honor those who have persevered and are graduating this semester.

FGA defines a first-generation student as anyone who is the first in their family to attend or graduate college, has a parent(s) who completed only an associate degree or any student who is the first in their family to attend college in the United States.

The picnic will take place on Friday May 6th at Sunset Park at noon (12 p.m.) FGA asks that students interested in attending the #Ready2TakeOnTheWorld picnic sign up and state any dietary restrictions by May 3 via this form: https://forms.gle/DKDJuxDheHGK1LdP6. FGA encourages all first-generation graduates to come and celebrate one another’s accomplishments. FGA would also like to highlight first-generation graduates on its Instagram page. If you are interested in being featured, please reach out to Karissa Romanelli (kbr5329@psu.edu) with your full name, major, academic college, plans after graduation and a photo of yourself.

If there are any questions, please contact Dynisty Wright (dze12@psu.edu).
