2015 Penn State Dairy Expo

Posted: March 19, 2015

Dairy Expo offers hands-on experience working with animals. Come to an information session on March 25th to select your calf.

Have you ever dreamed of leading a calf through the show ring just as many kids do at your hometown fair? Would you like to get hands-on experience with a dairy animal? Now is your chance! The Dairy Science Club is offering a dairy heifer showmanship contest and invites everyone with an interest in animals to participate in the contest on Saturday, April 25th. Each participant is assigned a calf or heifer and is responsible to train and fit his/her animal. This includes halter breaking, washing, and clipping the animal. You will be able to learn and enhance your animal handling skills. And the highlight of the contest – you will be able to demonstrate those skills in front of a judge as you compete with your peers.

There are three categories available: amateurs, who have never shown before, intermediates, and professionals.

For anyone, who would like to participate, but has no prior experience, don’t worry! There will be experienced personnel to assist and give direction as you learn each process. You will definitely have fun, and in the meantime you will gain friends and memories that last a long time!

Join us on Wednesday March 25th at 7:30 PM in 101 ASI to learn more about Dairy Expo and to be randomly assigned your animal. Contestants can work with their heifers each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m., and can select the nights that best fit their schedules. On Saturday April 25th you will be able to show the results of your efforts while competing in Dairy Expo!

If you are unable to join us on March 25th feel free to contact Brandon Grumbine at for more information and to sign up for the show. You may sign up through April 1st.
