The purpose of this award is to recognize Penn State Extension employees who are pursuing a graduate degree with a research focus on production agriculture or applied agricultural field research.

Eligibility

This scholarship is open to all graduate students in good academic standing in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State, regardless of enrollment status (full- or part-time) with first preference given to Penn State Extension employees.

The area of research focus should involve traditional field/production agriculture studies in livestock and/or agronomic or horticultural crop studies, soil and water conservation, bioenergy, ag energy conservation, marketing, financial management and nutritional aspects as they related directly to crops and/or livestock. This could also include 4-H, family and consumer sciences or community development Extension personnel who evaluate educational methodology or related aspects of production agriculture. Examples could be an evaluation of social media methods for roadside marketing of produce, the value of your crop yield contests with criteria for carbon capture or similar studies publishable in the Journal of Extension.

Up to $10,000

 

Selection Process

  • An award committee will be appointed by the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Education to select the recipient(s).
  • Awarding of this scholarship will be based on academic excellence and thus, the nominee's academic credentials may be reviewed as criteria for selection.

 

Guidelines

  • Letter of nomination from the department head, including a summary statement of the relevance and importance of the contributions made by the nominee on Penn State extension programs related to production agriculture or applied agricultural field research.
  • 2 page CV.
  • Each scholarship will be awarded for one academic year (Fall and Spring Semester). A previous recipient can apply for subsequent years, but awards may not exceed two academic years.
  • First preference will be given to Penn State Extension employees. If the first preference cannot be met, available funds will be awarded to any student, regardless of preference.
  • Individuals nominating should send a unified (nomination letter and CV) pdf format to the Office of Research and Graduate Education (graded@psu.edu), by Friday, November 11.
