Data centers are rapidly expanding across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to support growth in Artificial Intelligence (AI). To address research and extension needs, we created the Penn State Research and Extension Network for Data Centers in PA.
Background
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is experiencing rapid increases in data center development to meet the demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure and cloud computing. As new hyperscale and edge data centers are built, questions remain about water availability, energy demand, land use pressures, and tradeoffs between potential benefits and impacts to communities and the local environment. Municipalities and state agencies are increasingly facing decisions about data center proposals, often without access to science-based information to inform their decisions. Research addressing stakeholder needs and informing policies is urgently needed. Such research requires an interdisciplinary team of researchers and extension educators, with expertise across agricultural sciences, engineering, environmental science, community development, and economics. To address these research and extension needs, we created the Penn State Research and Extension Network for Data Centers in PA.
