2025 Alex and Jessie C. Black Award for Excellence in Research
Alexander N. Hristov
Alexander N. Hristov
Distinguished Professor of Dairy Nutrition
Dr. Hristov's career is a model of scientific excellence and impact. His pioneering research in dairy cattle nutrition, greenhouse gas emissions, and nitrogen use efficiency has transformed our understanding of sustainable agriculture. Through decades of work, he has developed nutritional strategies that reduce nitrogen excretion and enteric methane emissions—critical challenges for the future of dairy farming and environmentally responsible food systems.
Among his many groundbreaking contributions, Dr. Hristov led internationally recognized studies on feed additives such as 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) and red seaweed, which have influenced global policy and contributed to assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. His research on low-protein diets not only reduced environmental nitrogen losses but also identified histidine as a limiting amino acid in dairy cows—an insight that shaped the latest National Academies of Sciences recommendations.
Dr. Hristov has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles, with more than 23,000 citations and an h-index of 85, reflecting the depth and global reach of his work. He is a member of the Journal of Dairy Science 100 Club, a distinction reserved for researchers with over 100 publications in that journal alone.
Beyond his research, Dr. Hristov has secured major funding from USDA, FFAR, and international agencies, and has mentored numerous graduate students who now serve in leadership roles across academia, government, and industry.
His work exemplifies the land-grant mission of Penn State—advancing science, supporting producers, and addressing societal needs. Dr. Hristov's contributions have not only elevated the field of dairy nutrition but have also helped shape a more sustainable agricultural future.
