Preparing graduate students for a diversity of impactful careers in agriculture and beyond
The college is focused on preparing graduate students for both academic and nonacademic career paths, exposing them to a wide range of technological innovation as well as commercialization in ag-related industries. We aim to attract a wider diversity of students into agricultural sciences programs, enriching the learning environment with varied perspectives.
Opportunity
Penn State CAS has long been a leader in educating graduate students in a wide range of fields associated with agriculture, foods, plants, animals, bioenergy, community development, and environmental protection. Graduates of these programs constitute one of the largest alumni groups in the country and have established themselves as leaders of and contributors to important organizations across the state, country, and globe. As our college looks to the future of graduate education, there is a strong consensus for attracting a wider diversity of students into ag sciences programs, as well as for better preparing graduate students for nonacademic career paths. A more diverse graduate student base will benefit all students by bringing a wider range of perspectives and broadened understanding of environments in which agricultural sciences can be applied. In addition, preparing graduate students for nonacademic career paths will expose students to processes associated with technological innovation and commercialization in ag-related and ag-adjacent industries.
Framing Question
What would it look like if the College of Agricultural Sciences were able to more intentionally recruit, retain, and train outstanding and diverse students who are able to navigate and succeed in diverse career paths to address global issues?
