UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ten students in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences were among the recipients of scholarships awarded by the Pennsylvania Farm Show Scholarship Foundation.
The 2021 Pennsylvania Farm Show, held virtually Jan. 9-16, featured hundreds of online educational events and resources to showcase Pennsylvania agriculture.
Each year, the Farm Show Scholarship Foundation provides scholarships to students enrolled in college agriculture programs. Since its establishment in 1993, the foundation has awarded more than $1.7 million to support tomorrow’s leaders.
Fifteen students from multiple universities received $3,500 scholarships from the foundation. The Penn State students received an additional $2,000 from the college. Those recipients, their majors and their career aspirations are as follows:
— Mikara Anderson, of Three Springs, is a sophomore majoring in animal science. She plans to be an advocate for agriculture by working in state or federal government.
— Jaren Bomgardner, of Annville, is a freshman majoring in turfgrass science. Bomgardner plans to work as a golf course superintendent or head groundskeeper.
— Ethan Brummer, of Millerstown, is a sophomore studying agribusiness management. Brummer aspires to work on a livestock and specialty crop production operation.
— David Buckwalter, of Elizabethtown, is a junior majoring in animal science. He hopes to obtain his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and become a large animal veterinarian.
— Killian George, of Newport, is a sophomore majoring in agricultural and extension education. George plans to become an agricultural educator and FFA adviser and write sustainable agriculture curriculums for schools in developing countries.
— Brooke Kline, of Newport, is a junior majoring in animal science. She aims to join the poultry industry with career interests in quality assurance.
— Roarke Miller, of Annville, is a sophomore majoring in agribusiness management. Miller aspires to support the agricultural community with a career in agricultural lending.
— Marley Stonesifer, of Lewisberry, is a junior majoring in animal science. Stonesifer’s career goals involve performing animal welfare inspections for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
— Renee Svonavec, of Rockwood, is a junior majoring in agricultural science. Svonavec plans to work in agricultural communications.
— Madison Weaver, of Ephrata, is a junior majoring in animal science. Weaver plans to work in agricultural communications.
“Our college is very proud of these students and provides the additional scholarship to encourage the next generation to get involved in agriculture and the Pennsylvania Farm Show,” said Marra Baker, director of student recruitment and activities for the college. “The scholarship recipients are dedicated and motivated ambassadors who are making a difference in the industry.”
