The Consortium of Appalachian Fire Managers & Scientists announced the award at its sixth annual Fire in Eastern Oak Forests Conference in State College. Abrams was honored for his dedication to fire ecology and management and recognized for having a great influence on science and scientists in the field.

“With his emphasis on disturbance dynamics, he single-handedly influenced today’s forestry and wildlife professionals across the eastern deciduous biome,” Charles Ruffner, forestry professor at Southern Illinois University, told conference attendees, noting that Abrams has published 167 research papers.

“Hundreds of Penn State students have taken his forest ecology course and saw the role of fire on the land, and all of those students have gone forth to build careers and influence their agencies to embrace the role of fire in past and present-day land management.”
