UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The interconnectedness of microbial communities in animals, humans and the environment is a critical factor in global health, a concept known as “One Health.”

Erika Ganda, an assistant professor in Penn State’s Department of Animal Science, will shed light on the essential role microbes play in maintaining healthy ecosystems and ensuring food safety in the next Virtual Speaker Series from the Penn State Alumni Association.

The event will take place on Zoom from noon to 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 25. Registration is now open.

Ganda’s presentation will delve into how microbial ecosystems influence infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and foodborne illnesses. She will discuss the importance of surveillance systems in tracking harmful microbes throughout the food chain, from production to consumption, and highlight recent research revealing that not only farm animals but also pets can carry and spread germs. These insights emphasize the need for a data-driven approach to safeguarding both human and animal health.

With a background in veterinary medicine, Ganda specializes in studying microbial communities using advanced sequencing and bioinformatics tools. Her research focuses on rumen and gut microbiomes and their broader implications for food safety and disease prevention.

Passionate about interdisciplinary collaboration, she mentors students and participates in international research initiatives aimed at tackling global health challenges.

Join Ganda as she unpacks the science behind “One Health” and its implications for the future of public health and sustainable agriculture.

The Virtual Speaker Series is one of several programs offered online by the Penn State Alumni Association. For more events and programs that will inform, educate and inspire, visit the association’s PSAA Presents listing.
