Webinar series to focus on impact of war on Ukraine

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences is hosting a webinar series to share on-the-ground perspectives on the war on Ukraine. The presentations will take place from 11 a.m. to noon on Thursdays from March 16 through May 4 via Zoom.

The series is part of the Consortium for Ukrainian Rural and Agricultural Development program, sponsored by the college’s Woskob New Century Fund.

“Webinars are presented by Ukrainian academics and industry professionals who are experts in their fields and are on the ground in Ukraine, witnessing the situation firsthand,” said Deanna Behring, assistant dean for international programs and director of Ag Sciences Global. “We expect to learn valuable insights about how the war, which started a year ago, impacts agriculture, the environment and society.”

The series begins March 16 with a discussion led by two leaders of the Agricultural Extension Center Bridges in Kyiv: Lina Dotsenko, chief executive officer, and Vlad Konovalchuk, head of consulting. Their presentation is titled, “War in Ukraine: Resilience of Ukrainian Agriculture.”

On March 30, Iryna Lytvynchuk, head of the Innovation and Project Management Office at Polissia National University in Zhytomyr, will speak on the topic, “The Role of Local Governments in Addressing Challenges of the War in Ukraine.”

The schedule, topics and speakers for the remainder of the series are as follows:

— April 6: “Ten Steps of Surviving the War Conditions for the Agricultural University: Occupation and Relocation,” presented by Serhii Kiurchev, professor, president of the Tavria State Agrotechnological University in Melitopol.

— April 13: “Market Analysis of Agricultural Supply Chain Disruptions Due to the War in Ukraine,” presented by Maria Mikhailova, associate professor, department of marketing, reputation and customer experience management, State Biotechnological University in Kharkiv.

— April 20: “Export of Ukrainian Agricultural Products and Foods During the War: Significant Challenges,” presented by Darya Legeza, head of the marketing department, Tavria State Agrotechnological University in Melitopol.

— April 27: “Challenges of Wartime Production of Rapeseed in Ukraine,” presented by Petro Vyshnivskiy, professor, deputy director of the Ukrainian laboratory of food quality and safety of agricultural products, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv.

— May 4: “Women in Natural Resources During the War in Ukraine,” presented by Lesya Loyko, head of FORZA: Agency for the Sustainable Development of the Carpathian Region in Uzhhorod.
