Grow your beef stockmanship skills at upcoming field day

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Cattlemen’s Association and Penn State Extension will present the annual Beef Summer Field Day on Saturday, July 23, at the Herr Angus Farm in Nottingham.

The event will offer opportunities for beef producers to polish their stockmanship abilities, learn more about beef cattle feeding strategies, dial in their grazing program, and earn Beef Quality Assurance certification.

“Many people really look forward to this field day and make it a priority to attend because they’ve been the beneficiaries of the helpful material that is presented every year,” said field day organizer Cheryl Fairbairn, animal systems educator with Penn State Extension.

This year the field day features Ron Gill, professor and livestock specialist from Texas A&M University. He has won multiple awards in the beef industry education sector and specializes in low-stress livestock handling.

The field day begins with a 9 a.m. registration followed by a livestock-handling presentation at 10 a.m. by Gill.

Breakout sessions after lunch include:

— A Beef Quality Assurance chute-side training by the Pennsylvania Beef Council.

— A presentation, “Feeding for Quality Beef,” by Tara Felix, associate professor of animal science and extension beef specialist in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences.

— A workshop, “A Dozen Practices to Make Your Grazing Program More Effective in 2022,” by David Hartman, Penn State Extension livestock educator and forage expert.

After the field day wraps up at 3 p.m., attendees can take an optional tour of Herr Angus Farm.
