UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Institute for Sustainable Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Science at Penn State will present its inaugural Distinguished Speaker Series event on March 17. The first talk features Jessica Hellmann, professor of ecology and Ecolab Chair in Environmental Leadership at the University of Minnesota, and executive director of the UMN Institute on the Environment. Her talk, titled, "Answering the call for a new climate science," will look at the new and different requirements of academia in a climate and biodiversity crisis.
The University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment pursues interdisciplinary research that aims to move the needle on sustainability, support leaders who put sustainability into practice, and tell stories about sustainability solutions. Hellmann will discuss how her own work in species conservation and biogeography shows how climate change adaptation bridges the experimental sciences with ethics and policy. She also will challenge the audience to address the question of how academics can partner with communities to understand what resilience means and what successful interventions look like, as well as to examine new and sometimes controversial ideas around climate adaptation strategies.
