UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A free, three-hour, one-night course covering all things beef, offered by Penn State Extension this fall at seven locations, will introduce participants to a variety of topics helpful to learning how to raise beef cattle.
"This program is a great way to learn about beef production," said Melanie Barkley, an extension educator based in Bedford County who is coordinating the course. "It is designed to introduce a variety of concepts related to beef production to help participants decide if they would like to get started in the beef business."
After a 6 p.m. registration and light dinner, the workshop, which is co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Beef Producers Working Group, will cover topics such as genetics, equipment needs, reproduction basics, and breeding and calving issues, among other topics.
Later, at 8:15 p.m., participants will learn about feeding and nutrition, health issues, and marketing and finances, with the program concluding at 9:30 p.m.
