Ag Sciences faculty members honored for teaching, innovation with Bixler award

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Two faculty members in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences recently received the 2017 Anna and Guy Bixler Memorial Award in Food Science in recognition of their teaching innovation.

The Department of Food Science recognized John Coupland, professor of food science, and Robert Chiles, assistant professor of rural sociology, for their collaborative work in developing and initially presenting "Arguing About Food" (FDSC 444) as a permanent course, noted Bob Roberts, professor and head of food science.

"This course is a significant addition to the college's undergraduate course offerings," he said. "It allows students an opportunity to explore food and our food systems from a social science perspective, and to develop a deeper and broader appreciation of controversies surrounding food production and consumption. Coupland and Chiles are committed teachers who contribute greatly to the strength of our undergraduate program."

The Anna and Guy Bixler Memorial Award in Food Science recognizes innovative contributions to teaching and includes a $500 stipend for the recipients.
