Inaugural Ag Safety Expo to be held May 1 at Ag Arena

Event presented by the College of Agricultural Sciences

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences will hold its inaugural Ag Safety Expo from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 1, at the Agricultural Arena on the University Park campus. The event will feature farm safety and rescue demonstrations and displays with opportunity for hands-on participation.

Key participants include agricultural science students, farmers, agricultural workers and first responders. The expo is free and open to the public.

Scheduled demonstrations include:

— 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. — Flowing Grain Hazard and Grain Bin Entrapment and Rescue Simulator Demonstration. This hands-on demonstration will illustrate how grain flows in storage structures and transport vehicles, the hazards of flowing grain, and rescue procedures for freeing a victim entrapped in grain.

— 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. — Tractor Safety and Rollover Demonstration. This demonstration will feature a trailer mounted tractor cab equipped with hydraulic lift and will include a simulation of tractor operation on a slope up to 30 degrees. Participants will be interviewed as to their perception of slope angle.

Other demonstrations and displays include:

— Chainsaw Safety — Penn State Senior Research Technologist Mike Powell will be on hand to provide information about chainsaw safety and training.

— Pesticide Education — Representatives from Penn State’s Pesticide Education Program will be on hand to provide a display about Personal Protective Equipment and Pesticide Spill Cleanup.

— Horse Rescue Display — A static display of a horse mannequin equipped with a rescue harness will allow attendees to see rescue equipment that is available should the need arise.

— PTO Hazards Simulator — Intended for adult workers, this tabletop demo is designed to provide a hands‐on, life‐like PTO entanglement scenario. Reaction time is measured in relationship to the speed of a turning PTO shaft.

— Fire Extinguisher Simulator — Participants can learn some basics of the use of fire extinguishers and fight a digital fire using a laser-driven infrared portable extinguisher.

— Farm Hazard Hunt Display — This demo will show many sources of farm hazards. Hazard prevention, developing a strategy to deal with potential hazards, and responding to injuries or fatalities from farm hazards, will be discussed.
