Student teams from Penn State's four-year and two-year turfgrass programs won their respective divisions at the recent Sports Turf Managers Association Student Challenge.

The challenge was held Jan. 12-16 at STMA's Annual Conference and Exhibition in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Thirty-three teams from 22 colleges, universities and technical schools competed in the event. Competitors completed a multiple choice exam on athletic-turf and sports-field management topics and identified plants, insects, diseases and weeds, as well as performing a written case study.

A Penn State team won the four-year division for the third straight year. The winning four-year and two-year teams each won $4,000 to fund a practical learning lab.
