Posted: August 10, 2010

Mandel Smith, Penn State Cooperative Extension educator in Montgomery County, is the recipient of the 2010 Family and Consumer Science Scholarship in honor of Helen E. Bell.

The $1,000 scholarship provides financial assistance to an extension employee taking graduate courses or engaging in other professional development experiences that will improve extension programs for Pennsylvania families.

Smith provides leadership for the development, implementation and evaluation of educational programs in nutrition, health and food safety. She received bachelor's and master's degrees in Family and Consumer Sciences from Hampton University and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, respectively. The scholarship will support her efforts to obtain a bachelor's degree in nutrition.

The scholarship was established in honor of Helen Bell, professor emerita of home management extension, upon her retirement from Penn State in 1983.

Smith will be recognized at the Pennsylvania Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences awards breakfast this fall.
