Barbara Howell Raphael Receives Penn State Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award
Barbara Howell Raphael '66 Sci, '69g HHD, '72g Agr was honored with the Penn State Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni Award.
Raphael retired in 2008 as executive vice president of research and development for Cadbury, Ltd., the second-largest multinational confectionary brand in the world. During her 18-year tenure with the company, she served in progressively more responsible positions. She designed a state-of-the-art laboratory facility in Morristown, N.J., and launched new products, including Dentyne Ice, Stride, and Trident White.
The first woman to receive a graduate assistantship in food science at Penn State, Raphael taught at the University of Delaware for a short time before taking a position with General Foods. There, she was honored with the company's President's Award for implementing a new process for Cool Whip® frozen whipped topping. She was credited with saving the company $1 million.
