A new tool developed by Heather Gall, assistant professor of agricultural and biological engineering, and three undergraduate students can help consumers calculate their emerging-contaminant footprint.
Humans use a wide variety of chemicals in their everyday lives, including over-the-counter medications, prescription drugs, and personal care products. These often become part of the wastewater stream and can harm the environment.
The tool is a downloadable spreadsheet consumers can use to document the types of products they have in their homes and calculate the potential water-quality impacts of those chemicals.
